I was in a situation of a broken home and a family that had 2 different fathers. The kids only seen one of the dads and he was pretty much of a jerk about the other child not being his but I saw how the other child acted out and felt his pain so i wrote this song as I took over the role of both their dads. It is a heart breaking tune if you have ever been in that situation and have a heart. I wrote about it. Oh yeah and I kept tripping over this stupid pair of shoes all the time of one of the dads that had been there for over a year before i threw them away. They were much too small anyway. By the way they both still call me Dad even today 20 years later. It's a good feeling and a good song I hope you can learn something by it and relate to it. I know a single mom with a couple of kids can.

Lyrics

"Empty Shoes"
words & music by Lewis Derr
copyright 1989
Luder West Music BMI

Verse 1: When he speaks he's sure no one will listen,
He's troubled, trying his best to understand
Why his daddy says he's not, his real son..
That his brother is the only real one.

Chorus: Now the only thing he had to look up to
before I came to take his hand..
was his daddy's empty shoes
where there should have been standin'
a real man.....

Verse 2 : Today He slipped and called me Daddy
I could see that he was afraid,
I'd turn my back but son you will see
This Dad is here to stay.

Chorus: Now the only thing he had to look up to
before I came to take his hand
was his Daddy's empty shoes
where there should have been standin'
a real man.

Verse 3: Now when he speaks, I'm right here to listen.
And I walk so proud in those shoes
Bridge: If you see a pair sitting empty
and your afraid your gonna loose
Just remember that little boy starin'
At that pair of empty shoes.
Just remember that little boy starin'
At that pair of Empty Shoes.....mm...mmm...(end)
