The Suits –
Going back many years, I took notice of the millions of people who struggle financially, socially, and otherwise in societies around the world.
This struggle brings many into contact with those who wear garments known as suits and are in command of the various power structures that govern people’s lives locally and globally.
In this song, I imagined a person struggling with their encounters with those who wear these garments and beginning to feel as if they too wore a suit garment; their life could possibly change for the better.
This person extolls the perceived virtues of donning this style of garment in the song’s outro, but still doesn’t answer the question of what could possibly occur if one were to cross over and have to experience life’s imbalances from a differing point of view.

" “The Suits” begins with a futuristic synthesizer intro that snaps into a tight and funky groove topped off with a classy sounding jazz flavored piano. The lyrics immediately start and express the desire to establish yourself on the societal ladder. These are lyrics that everyone can identify with" -

"The Suits by Jerome Lee is a R&B track that touches upon the styles of the 1980s and 1990s to build upon a very current and contemporary sound. The current sound of the track is predicated on how successfully it builds this blueprint; hints of Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and Herbie Hancock can all be heard here" -

Lyrics

The Suits by Jerome Lee Washington ©1994 BMI

Verse 1
Man in a suit, speaking big words
In the name of justice, it’s how he’s learned
To free the guilty while the innocent hide
One more step to kill a city’s pride
I sit here trembling, seems cold today
No job, no income, no rate of pay
Man in a suit, please help me now
He said “You got dollars? I’ll show you how!”

Chorus
Baby I gotta wear a suit
Wear a suit to get over
Baby I gotta wear a suit
For sure as I get older
Baby I gotta buy a suit
Makes me look important
Baby I gotta buy a suit
Helps to make a point now

Verse 2
Woman in a suit, speaking big words
In the name of justice, it’s how she’s learned
To fight right to life, or rights for all
Decide together, divided we fall
I’m out here running, seems cold today
Almost out of money, rent soon to pay
Woman in a suit, what’s the deal now?
She said “Up the green, I’ll show you how!”

Bridge
Three piece or two piece, grey brown or blue
Pinstripes or solid, man, there are so much to choose
People of all walks are wearing them now
Makes the folks listen, see what I’m missing!

Verse 3
Baby in a suit speaking new words
In the name of justice, how will it learn?
‘Cause to survive, the odds are stacked
An uphill struggle from the very first smack
I’m out here walking, seems cold today
All my logic gets in my way
Baby in a suit, when will you say
“Life’s about money, I grew up today!”

Outro Verses
I’ll wear me a suit
I’ll look so clean, like a man of means (mmm...)

I’ll buy me a suit
For church or business, I’ll be a witness (yea...)

I’ll wear me a suit
For dinner or theater, it couldn’t be clearer (no...)

I’ll buy me a suit
Maybe Brooks Brothers, or one of the others (oh...)
