Austin began his career at the age of 13 as a recording artist on RCA Records. While signed to the label he penned his first release as a songwriter “Can’t Be Wasting My Time” on the artist Mona Lisa for the Wayans Bros movie “Don’t Be A Menace”. After 3 years of being signed to RCA, Austin was later dropped and replaced by artist Tyrese. This turned to be the jump start to Austin’s full time songwriting career as it led to him penning Tyrese’s breakout hit “ Sweet Lady” with music producer Troy Taylor.
Austin has had 10 number one hits. 5 Grammy Award Nominations including 2 wins. He has had over 20 Top Ten hits on Billboard. His song “Be Without You” written for Mary J. Blige holds the record for most consecutive weeks at number one on Billboard’s Hot R&B chart (15 weeks). His song “We Belong Together” which was co-written with Jermaine Dupri & Mariah Carey for Carey’s “Emancipation of MiMi” project topped Billboard’s Hot 100 chart for 14 consecutive weeks coming one week shy of the all time record set by Carey’s “One Sweet Day”. The record capped it’s amazing run of success as it was named the “Song of the Decade” by Billboard Magazine.
2015 marks Austin’s 22nd year in a career that has produced break out hits “Yo (Excuse Me Miss)” and “With You” for superstar Chris Brown, “Just Be A Man About It” for Toni Braxton, “Like You” for Bow Wow feat. Ciara, & the posthumous hit “I Miss You” for Aaliyah. He’s also Co-Executive Produced Trey Songz breakout album “Ready” as well as it’s successful follow up “Passion, Pain, & Pleasure”. He’s been named Billboard’s top writer of the year 3 times. In 2007 he was named ASCAP’s Pop and R&B “Songwriter of the Year”.
