Liner notes
Wrote most of this tune in my head while driving on US 31 between my two hometowns - Bloomington, where I live now, and South Bend, where I grew up. Had to pull over to a Bob Evans so I could write it down. Suzette Weakley suggested the line about feeling like the king, which pulled the whole story together. Incidentally, I play all of the instruments on this recording, except the drums, by Ken Terrell. For a more rocking tune, check out 'Bullseye', also posted in my Portfolio.
About the artist
Tom Marshalek has been writing and performing songs since the 80's. His primary style is Rock/Alternative, influenced by classic groups like the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith, with crossover potential both in the directions of Country and R&B, serving to broaden the appeal of his songs. If you're pitching Tom as a performer, just say "Rock". But if you need a song from another genre for a project, feel free to ask him - he just may have one up his sleeve! Originally classically trained on the violin, Tom is also in demand as a lead guitar player (and occasional fiddler). Working as a mobile disc jockey also gives him the opportunity to keep up on the latest pop, rock, hip hop, and country, and see first hand what makes people dance, sing along, and smile.
Although he is happy often working behind the scenes in the music biz, Tom is also a proponent of the idea that people are open to becoming fans of "new" performers of any age. Not only can they be highly entertained and interested by older performers, but it helps to keep their own dreams alive!
Lyrics
1.
G
I ain't never been to Memphis
C G
I've been to Nashville almost two times
G
I had high hopes when I sent this song
C G etc.
To a producer friend of mine
Well I ain't never had a hit
And I ain't no country star
But I sure do like to strum a tune
Down at the honky tonk bar (Stop)
(Chorus)
... G
At the honky tonk bar
In my hometown
C G
Besides that I don't get much around
G
That's where I like to drink my beer
D G
I feel like the king when I'm in here
2.
Still someday I'll get to Memphis
Stop in Nashville on the way through
And when I get all the way down
I'm sing this song for you (Stop)
(Chorus)
'Bout the honky tonk bar...
(Soloes: verse chorus)
3.
Gonna sing my song to Elvis
With the microphone he used on hound dog
And when I get done I'll have a bigger hit
Than Jeremiah D. Bullfrog (Stop)
(To the tune of chorus)
At the honky bars in Memphis
And all over Tennessee
I suppose that I'll have to play them all
But the only bar for me (Stop)
(Chorus)
Is the honky tonk bar in my hometown...
