About the artist

John David Peters is a New Mexico award-winning songwriter. His song “Don’t Take Me for a Hero” won “Best Song” at the 2019 New Mexico Music Awards. His songs have been finalists in several other contests as well. David’s songs cover a wide range of emotions and topics from the sadness of losing love and friendship to humor about the weather and social issues. David’s songwriting is primarily folk/Americana, but he mixes in some blues, pop, and country. David considers Paul Simon and Canadian folksinger Gordon Lightfoot as his primary songwriting influences.

David began playing guitar and writing his own songs at the ripe old age of 17. He played guitar and wrote songs on and off during his thirty-one year career as a high school English/reading teacher. After retiring from teaching, he took his music and ventured out into the public arena to perform for the first time.

Currently David runs a local weekly open mic for songwriters and is actively marketing his music in Nashville.

Lyrics

When the Love is Gone
by John David Peters

What do you do when the love is gone, and the mem’ries they aren’t worth a dime?
You spent all those years hurting so much that it was not worth the time.

Going to be all you did was sleep watching the silence grow long and deep.

What do you do when she closes the door with the echo of the last words she said?
She leaves you so empty and so alone, and you know now her love is dead.

Do you sit in your chair and wonder why or tell yourself it was all a lie?

Now it is time to start again, so you slip her picture in the drawer.
You clean out the closet that held her clothes, and you take her towels off the door.

You strip down the bed and make it new, knowing now that your love is through.

What do you do when the love is gone, and you feel all alone in the place?
Isn’t there someone out there for you, if only you could see a face?

The hurt in your heart may never go away, but does that mean all your love has gone
astray?

So you open the door and turn out the light and head down the dark corridor.
You take the steps down to the street not wanting to think anymore.

You breathe a sigh and behold the sun knowing somewhere there will be someone.
