Marc Marot:
Following the obligatory 5 years playing guitar in a band, I started my professional career in 1982 as the talent scout of UK Independent publisher, Eaton Music. I was appointed MD of Chris Blackwell's Blue Mountain Music in 1984, working with U2 and the Reggae catalogue, amongst others. Whilst there, I had my first international No. 1 single with 'Pump Up the Volume'. My publishing signings included, amongst many others, Massive Attack, De La Soul (UK deal) and Shakespeare's Sister (Marcy Levy).
I subsequently headed every division of Island until I was appointed as the MD of Island Records in 1990, the youngest MD in the UK music industry at that time. Amongst the Artists signed and/or developed by my team while at Island Records were Pulp, PJ Harvey, The Stereo MCs, P.M.Dawn, The Cranberries, Chakka Demus and Pliers, NWA, The Orb, Ice Cube, Talvin Singh, Tricky and Nine Inch Nails.
Artists signed during my tenure as Island Records MD, have won 25% of the prestigious Mercury Music 'Record of the Year' prizes. Five awards in the first 20 years and a further ten Island albums were short-listed, such was the emphasis on quality control. P.J.Harvey is the only artist to win the prize for a second time in 2011.
I guided U2's recording career throughout the 1990's, from the release of Achtung Baby to just prior to the release of ‘all you can’t leave behind’ selling close to 50 million albums in the process. In 1998 I personally introduced Bono to the concept of third world debt relief via my involvement in the ‘Jubilee 2000’ campaign and subsequently oversaw the ‘drop the debt’ initiative from within the music industry for a while.
Upon leaving Island records in 2000 I produced and oversaw the design and implementation of the multi award winning U2.com, one of the most successful music sites on the web.
As a manger my Clients have included Richard Ashcroft, Lemon Jelly, Paul Oakenfold, and Yusuf Islam. Islam’s comeback album ‘Another cup’ sold 850,000 copies worldwide under my management.
I have acted as music supervisor and producer on many film soundtracks from producing the soundtrack and assisting composer Trevor Jones on ‘Angel Heart’, ‘Mississippi Burning’, and ‘In the Name of the Father’ (client Trevor Jones and Bono), to the soundtrack for ‘Notting Hill’ which sold over 4,000,000 CD’s. I signed the soundtrack deal for Guy Richie’s ‘Lock, stock and two smoking Barrels’ which sold over 1,000,000 CD’s worldwide.
In 2007 the Isle of Man film fund’s commercial arm CinemaNX appointed my team (now with me at Crown) as their music supervisor for a production slate of up to four films per year. Recent credits have included the award winning films ‘Heartless’, ‘The disappearance of Alice Creed’, ‘Me and Orson Welles and the box office record breaker ‘TT3D Closer to the edge’. During my period managing Paul Oakenfold we worked on eight number 1 USA box office movies, including ‘The Matrix’, ‘Swordfish’ and ‘Collateral’
I joined Crown Talent and Media Group as Chairman and partner in 2012
