I am managing director of Uthoht Production Enterprises. A company with interests in Music Recording (Serius Entertainment), Music Publishing (Uthoht Music Publishing, Uthoht Music Solutions) and Eventing.
I started my career as a rapper frequenting hip hop matinee sessions at Pure Platinum, which moved to Q’s then Le Club and Rippington’s. I was encouraged by a friend and fellow m.c. to start organizing hip hop sessions at night. Under the banner of Universal Thoughts I organized some hip hop gigs and competitions in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. This led me to being involved with major record companies like Universal, Sony and Gallo through doing promotional work for their new releases.
At that time I was also a member of a duo called Metamo’Forces and we were fortunate enough to be asked to record a track for the first hip-hop compilation in South Africa, the Muthaload, in 1997. After choosing different career paths Metamo’Forces was dissolved and I recorded my first album in 1998 using the name SPEX. I titled the album RhymzIwrote and released it in 1999. It became the first release by a solo Hip Hop artist in South Africa and launched the hip hop industry in Johannesburg. It contained tracks like Hizo and Matters of the Heart which gained heavy airplay on Y-fm.
In 2003 I released my second album, Nothing for Mahala. It contained my biggest hit to date, Celebrate, featuring Zenzi Lee, Zamani and production by Afrika Mkhize.
I have since taken a break from recording to focus on my business.
