Lyrics
That September,
When you called to say good-bye,
I still remember
Before you started to cry.
You said, “Please don’t forget me...if I don’t come home.
I’ll love you forever” - then you hung up the phone...
I still remember.
All that we had
Can’t be measured by the loss.
The whole thing’s so sad,
No one will ever count the cost -
And it feels like landing, just short of understanding
The burning embers of a world we were planning...
Before September,
I still remember.
I speak your name to the sky,
I shed another tear,
Cause every time I look that way it feels like you’re still here.
And I know I’m not alone,
I hear you say it plain:
No flood will ever drown our love or ever quell the flame -
And it makes me strong...
And I carry on
Like I remember,
Before September.
That September,
That message on my phone.
I still remember;
It was there when I got home.
And you were running out of time, but it’s all you thought to do
Your heart was on the line, but Babe, you got that message thru:
“I love you” -
And I remember...
I speak your name to the sky,
I shed another tear,
Cause every time I look that way it feels like you’re still here.
And I know I’m not alone,
I hear you say it plain:
No flood will ever drown our love or ever quell the flame -
And it makes me strong...
And I carry on
Like I remember...
And I know I’m not alone,
I hear you say it plain:
No flood will ever drown our love or ever quell the flame -
And it makes me strong,
And I carry on
Like I remember,
Before September.
“I love you” -
And I’ll remember,
Long...long after that September.
About the artist
"Paul Buckberry has all the ingredients that, in my humble opinion, are necessary in order to stand out from the endless competition out there....great playing, vocals, recording/production, killer tones & most of all solid songs - especially the moving “That September”. A really strong song from a man that I hope gets the attention he truly deserves" - John Platania (guitarist for Van Morrison).
“Paul Buckberry was born to write songs that you’d want to hear on your car stereo as you hit the road” – Brent McKean, Revolver.
“A seamless mix of country, folk and blues encapsulating perfectly the appeal of the true singer-songwriter.” – MM, Maverick Magazine (UK)
Liner notes
“That September” is a love song of hope and healing for the 9/11 generation. While it speaks directly to an American market, “That September” has world appeal to anyone who was at least ten years old in 2001. What sets “That September” apart from other topical songs is the focus. The song has been crafted so well, that topical songs aside it still works beautifully as a stand-alone love song. Most 9/11 songs focus on the bigger issues, such as freedom or patriotism. “That September” is about one couple and the key message of the story is universal: love prevails beyond the grave and with that faith we can carry on, like our loved one’s would want us to. The arrangement is ready for the right voice and the song is ready to keep on giving its message of hope for many years to come.
